Mapping of the conservation status of old icons by crackle net analysis

Tibor Lukic Faculty of Technical Sciences University of Novi Sad

Abstract:

Mapping of conservation state of icons (or easel painting in general) is a significant process for their scientific documentation, condition monitoring, origin investigation and preservation procedures. Surface crackles on paintings are mostly a natural consequence of aging and the used art-technical and art-technological methods. Therefore, the crackles net, together with its topology, is an important indicator for the conservation status of icons.

This presentation will give a review of the research work on analysis and interpretation of crackle structure on a number of Orthodox icons owned by "Galerija Matice Srpske" in Novi Sad and "Narodni Muzej" in Belgade, Serbia. We also show an image processing algorithm developed for automatic crackle net segmentation from digitized/scanned icons.

The presented work is supported by COST COSCH Project and carried out in accordance with its objectives and aims related to the preservation of cultural heritage in Europe.
